Board Game Review: Scooby Doo Escape from the Haunted Mansion

Updated: Dec 2, 2021

Jinkies! Grab your Scooby snacks, sharpen your sleuthing skills, and get ready for a classic who-done-it adventure. There's mystery, intrigue, and hijinks; everything you would expect from the meddling kids of Mystery Incorporated.

Spider: I liked the game, but I thought it was a little harder than the theme and artwork led me to believe. After the first couple of clues I paused and thought, "Scooby Doo, isn't it a kids game?" I anticipated the clues to be easier. Overall, I thought the clues and puzzles were clever, but doable. It's aged correctly at 12+.

Cat: I loved the game. I thought it was so fun to go through the story and solve the puzzles. I got stumped a couple of times working through, but working together we helped each other pretty quickly move through and tough spots. We only had to eat a handful of Scooby snacks throughout the game for various reasons.

Spider: I thought it was thematically appropriate, very Scooby Doo. The characters were all spot on. I felt like the components were kind of low quality, but that was to be expected for the price point and because it is a one time play through. I think it actually would have been a waste of money to invest more in the pieces. It was the right quality for the utility and price point.

Cat: I was ready for classic Scooby Doo personalities and this game did not disappoint. I could hear the classic voices and mannerisms through the writing. Although the components weren't super I loved the Skeleton Key, I'm a sucker for polyomino style things so this was right up my alley.

Spider: I liked that you could do the game in two chapters. The instructions were really clear to put things away and break back out. We were able to play for awhile, put it away, go eat dinner, and come back to finish the game. It made for a fun Saturday afternoon and evening.

This is a game that I'd recommend to almost anyone, just be mindful of the age indication. Three people was a great number. I imagine that five or six people might be annoying unless you're a regular group that is used to working together.

Sauce: I thought the game was really fun. The ending got kinda stressful. Did we miss a clue?

There were so many brain ticklers, paying attention to the detail and remembering them got tough. One of the hardest parts was figuring out how to solve the final puzzle. I just didn't want to make the choice and then be wrong after solving all of the previous puzzles.

Overall Ratings:

Pros:

Solid puzzles

Cheap

Playing experience was fun

Cons:

Theme implied better for younger kids

Scale (1 to 4; worst to best)

Spider: Three

Cat: Three

Sauce: Four
