Review: Funfair

Who is the next theme park master in your group? One must ask themselves, do I want leisure rides, thrill rides, cinemas, or restaurants? Which blueprints should I follow? How do I maximize the city card bonuses to my advantage? All the while, you must design your park, build the attractions, add on upgrades. You can stick with one theme or have many, you can hire on personnel to multiply your earnings. With this game all of the options are on the table and it's up to you to make the most of your tableau to get those coins.

Spider: It's a fun game. I thought it was a very accessible game. It was super easy to understand. Even some simple games have overly complicated instructions, but this game just inherently made sense.

This would be a very good gateway game. It was very light, but it had sufficient depth to be engaging. The friendly theme made the game amenable to the gateway style. If you're a cutthroat gamer, this just isn't the game for you.

I didn't find this game to be too interactive. The only time I really thought about what Cat was doing was when I thought to try and help her.

The actual game was really well made. The art style really captured the theme-park, circus magic. It really reminded me of being a kid.

Cat: Right, I felt the magic, too. I just kept thinking about our trips to Disney and Universal. They illustrated the theme beautifully and truly captured the feelings. The swirly rides, the different lightings on the cards, the different people. I liked how they had faces on the personnel cards that looked like real people.

Spider: It made it seem more real. These were people that worked these jobs at your park: the HR manager, the cotton candy clerk, the ticket taker for the theater.

Spider: Funfair is a great example of a basic board game that doesn't really any problems and it's made with love, but it wouldn't be a staple of game night. It's a great occasional game.

Cat: Exactly. It's not a game that I would ever get rid of; it's a great game for noobs. So, if we hosted a gaming night with friends that weren't really into gaming it's perfect to support a themed night. Make popcorn, cotton candy, have some soda pop, play the game. It's a great theme game to add into party night.

Pros:

  • Well developed theme

  • realistic art

  • fun components

Cons:

  • Once you've played it a few times it feels repetitive
