Board Game Review: Project L

Perform placements puzzling polyomino pieces. Project L brings to life the polyomino stylings of Tetris in a low-key turn taking puzzler.

Spider: I loved how simple it was to learn and teach. I loved the tactile and chunky pieces. The pieces were colorful and well made. It was really straight forward, simple, and quick. I thought it ended just at the right time.

All of the games ended up being really close in score, so no one ever ran away with it. There was always a chance. You definitely couldn't tell who was going to win, but honestly it didn't even matter. I didn't feel much of a sense of competition, I just kept trying to increase my scores from the previous times I played. There didn't seem like an obvious take-that, hate-draft element to the game. I definitely felt the multi-player solitaire vibe, which I've always kind of liked. I'm glad there weren't any obscure, odd penalties to sabotage people.

It really was just like a Tetris board game, but as a kid that grew up when that was big it was just simple fun. It was a very relaxing game, I don't remember feeling an ounce of frustration or angst. All the puzzles were so little and quick it made things manageable. Even if you got messed up, there will still opportunities. I liked that you could do multiple puzzles at the same time. I appreciated that you can trade up for pieces.

For the price of the game, I was surprised at the quality. The pieces were quality and not just cardboard cutouts on a smooth board. They were chunky, colorful pieces you place on inset boards. I loved how the pieces locked into the boards. With kids wandering around we didn't have to worry about papers getting bumped and pieces flying.

I'm not sure why it was called Project L. It could have been called anything. The theme was completely unimportant, irrelevant. It was fun just to solve the puzzles and keep moving. Maybe, it said in the instructions, but it didn't even matter for the fun of the game.

Cat: I am a huge fan of polyomino games. I loved the turn taking mechanisms. I loved the inset boards and the colorful pieces. I liked how vivid the pieces were compared to the black and white backgrounds. I also liked how solving the puzzles would earn you pieces. So, that was like an engine builder, but you also got points. Solving all the mini-puzzles was great. I enjoyed the solitaire style and focused on just getting what I wanted and needed.
